Reading the numbers
The line in this facts table that matters most is the heavy vehicle one: all 855 rest areas New South Wales has in the national dataset are listed with a heavy vehicle area. These bays serve road freight as much as holiday traffic, so park where light vehicles are meant to go, keep a caravan clear of the truck lanes and expect trucks coming and going at any hour. Transport for NSW adds 14 more records, each over 250 m from a national entry, so they are separate stops rather than repeats.
Roads show where the stops cluster. The Newell Highway has 93, well ahead of the Hume Highway with 59, followed by the Sturt Highway (46), the Pacific Highway (43) and the Barrier Highway (42). On the Newell that density lets you plan short legs between breaks. On roads outside the top five, check the dot map for spacing before you commit to a long stretch.
Picnic tables are the facility the source lists most often, at 509 sites or 60 per cent. Toilets are listed at 390 (46 per cent) and accessible toilets at 213. Shelter is listed at only 126 and barbecues at 157. This state’s facts table has no drinking water line at all, so carry what you need rather than counting on a tap. The places below lean towards the better-equipped entries, and many list a playground (85 statewide), which makes Appin Park, Balranald Lions Park or Macksville Lions Park handy breaks with children. Names ending in Northbound, Southbound or Westbound, such as the paired Mundoonan Rest Area entries, tell you which direction of travel each one is named for.
The locality shown for each place is often a council area, such as Bega Valley or Greater Hume Shire, which tells you whose rules to look up. Every NSW record is listed as free to use, but free to stop is not the same as free to camp. The dataset says nothing about overnight stays and the rules vary from site to site, so read the signs when you pull in, check Transport for NSW or the local council, and see the camping-rules guide for New South Wales linked on this page before planning to sleep at any of these bays.
