Reading the numbers

Washout taps are the standout in Victoria’s data. The National Public Toilet Map lists one at 40 of the state’s 181 dump points (22%), while drinking water is listed at only 14 (8%). In practice, you are more likely to find somewhere to rinse a cassette than somewhere to top up your drinking tank at the same stop. Keep those two taps apart in your head: the washout tap is for cleaning the cassette, not for filling bottles.

The 181 dump points cover 144 towns and localities, so most towns that have one have a single site. Ararat, Donald, Stawell and Warrnambool share the highest count with three each, and Boort follows with two. Daylesford appears twice in the list below, once at Victoria Park Oval and once at Jubilee Lake Caravan Park, and Ararat’s entries include Green Hill Lake Camping.

Facility flags beyond the taps are patchy. Toilets are listed at 57 sites, an accessible toilet at 42 and accessible parking at 17, with showers and sharps disposal at 12 each. Only one entry in the list below, Chirnside Park Kimberly Reserve Oval, carries all of these flags at once, and Swan Hill Tourist Information Bay misses only showers. If a flag is missing, the source has not listed it, which is different from the site not having it.

Of the 181, 173 are listed as free to use (96%). The app also counts 630 water filling points across Victoria, which helps given how rarely drinking water is listed at the dump points themselves. Several entries, such as the Airport and RV Dump Point at Benalla, Corryong Saleyards and the Foreshore Reserve at Port Albert, are worth checking on their linked page for current access. Cassette and black or grey tank waste goes into a dump point and nowhere else.
