Reading the numbers
Victoria’s 438 campgrounds come from two agencies: 350 from DEECA and 88 from Parks Victoria. Only 35 parks and reserves are named as holding a campground, so most of the campgrounds in this data are not tied to a named park at all. The park ranking is shallow as a result. Lower Glenelg National Park leads with 12 and Grampians National Park follows with 11; Croajingolong and Wilsons Promontory national parks have 6 each, and every other park in the top ten has 3.
Read the facility figures as a record of what the sources list, which is not the same as what is on the ground. Toilets are listed at 69 campgrounds (16%), drinking water at 36 (8%), showers at 13 (3%) and phone reception at only 4. With so few flags set, an empty facilities line tells you the source recorded nothing, not that the site has nothing. Plan to be self-sufficient for water, then confirm the details on the official page.
This hub carries no fee summary for campgrounds in Victoria, so nothing here tells you which sites charge or take bookings. Dogs are listed as not allowed at 3 campgrounds, including Lake Catani in Mount Buffalo National Park and the Buchan Caves Campground in Buchan Caves Reserve. Elsewhere, a blank dog field says nothing either way, so anyone travelling with a dog should look up each campground with Parks Victoria or DEECA before leaving home.
The named places below favour campgrounds with more facilities listed, and Lower Glenelg National Park features heavily: Hutchessons, McLennans Punt, Wilson Hall, Forest South, Red Gum Landing, Wild Dog Bend and Battersby all sit there, and four of them have a boat ramp listed. Buandik and Smiths Mill in the Grampians, and Big Hill and Hammonds in Great Otway National Park, are other well-listed starting points. Because so much of the state’s data sits outside named parks, the map is the better guide to coverage than the list.
