Reading the numbers

All 80 dump points in Tasmania are listed as free to use, and they are spread over 65 towns and localities. Pontville and Sheffield each have three, and Bakers Beach, Bicheno and Geeveston two. Pontville’s entries include Brighton Showground, and Sheffield Recreation Ground appears in the list below.

The National Public Toilet Map records fewer facilities here than you might hope. A washout tap is listed at 14 sites (18%) and drinking water at just 7 (9%). Toilets are listed at 24, an accessible toilet at 18, accessible parking at 16 (20%), showers at 6 and sharps disposal at 3. Some entries list very little: Arthurs Lake and Burtons Factory Site at Cygnet list only toilets, and Batchelor St in Queenstown and Morrisby Street in Rosebery list a washout tap and accessible parking. That reflects what the source records, not necessarily what is on the ground.

Water is the thing to plan around. The app holds 73 water filling points across Tasmania, fewer than the 80 dump points, and drinking water is rarely listed at the dump points themselves. South Burnie Beach, Westbury Recreation Ground, the Caravan Park at New Norfolk and Duck Park at Swansea are among the few that list it. A washout tap is for rinsing a cassette and is not a substitute.

Many hosts in the list below are community spaces: recreation grounds, ovals, a community hall at Coles Bay, the George Town Visitor Information Centre and foreshores such as Franklin. Macquarie Heads Camping Ground at Strahan and Tatlows Beach at Stanley are among the coastal entries. Each entry links to its National Public Toilet Map page, which is the place to confirm details before a visit. Toilet cassettes and black or grey tanks are emptied at dump points like these and never anywhere else.
