Rules vary by product, origin and destination. Check the official traveller information before crossing a state or quarantine-zone border.

Fresh fruit, vegetables, honey, plants and soil are common concerns. Restrictions can apply even when the item was bought in an Australian supermarket.

Use quarantine bins

Eat allowed produce before the border or place restricted items in a quarantine bin. Do not hide food in the vehicle or leave it beside the road.

Keep receipts and packaging when official advice says a commercially treated product is permitted.

Clean camping equipment

Remove soil, seeds and plant material from boots, tents, bikes and recovery gear. Dry water equipment before moving between catchments where required.

Clean gear also lasts longer and avoids carrying ants, weeds and pathogens into the next campground.

Fruit fly zones are the main issue

South Australia, Tasmania and parts of Victoria and New South Wales maintain fruit fly exclusion zones. Carrying fresh fruit and some vegetables into them is prohibited, with disposal bins provided at borders and checkpoints operating.

Fines apply whether or not you knew, and inspections at the South Australian border and the Tasmanian ferry terminal are routine. Detector dogs work some crossings.

The practical approach is to plan shopping around the borders: run the fridge down before a crossing and restock immediately after. This costs nothing and removes the problem entirely.

Tasmania and Western Australia

Tasmania restricts fresh produce, plants, soil, honey and used beekeeping equipment on arrival by ferry or air. The rules protect an island free of several mainland pests and are enforced at the terminal.

Western Australia operates quarantine checkpoints on eastern approaches including the Eyre Highway, restricting fruit, vegetables, honey, plants and soil. This catches travellers who stocked up before crossing the Nullarbor.

Both jurisdictions publish current restricted item lists that change with outbreaks. Check before travelling rather than relying on what applied on a previous trip.

Soil, gear and weeds

Soil on boots, tent pegs, bicycles and vehicles moves plant pathogens and weed seeds between regions. Phytophthora dieback in Western Australia is spread this way and has devastated large areas of native vegetation.

Clean footwear and gear between regions, use the cleaning stations provided at park entrances in dieback areas, and stay on formed tracks and roads where signage asks you to.

Firewood also moves pests. Several regions restrict moving firewood, and buying local rather than carrying a load across state lines is the safer practice.

Why it matters

Australia's agricultural industries are free of many pests present elsewhere, and that status depends on internal barriers as much as international ones. A single fruit fly outbreak can cost a region's growers their export markets.

For native ecosystems the stakes are similar. Dieback, myrtle rust and weed incursions have permanently altered large areas, and most of that movement was human-assisted and avoidable.

Complying costs a few minutes and some planning around shopping. Treat the bins at a border as a normal part of a road trip rather than an inconvenience.
