A campervan may feel like a large car until braking, crosswind or a low branch exposes its real size. The safe handover begins with dimensions, loaded weight, licence class and rental conditions.
Know the vehicle before moving
Record the height, length and GVM, locate the fuel type and learn the mirrors, blind spots and controls. A vehicle above 4.5 tonnes may fall outside an ordinary car licence.
Confirm tyre, awning, roof, gas and interior stowage procedures with the operator.
Everyone travels in a proper seat
Beds and living areas are not passenger positions while moving. Every occupant must use an approved seat and the required restraint.
Secure loose items before every drive. A cupboard or bottle becomes dangerous under sudden braking.

Drive for the loaded vehicle
Allow more stopping distance, turn smoothly and slow before bends, gravel, crosswinds and narrow shoulders. A legal maximum can still be unsafe.

Wind, road trains and overtaking
A high-sided campervan catches crosswind badly, and a passing road train produces a significant push followed by a pull. Hold the wheel firmly with both hands and do not correct sharply.
Overtaking in a campervan requires far more clear road than a car needs, and most Australian highways are two-lane with limited passing lanes. If an overtake feels marginal, do not attempt it.
When traffic builds behind you, use the next slow vehicle bay and let it past. Frustrated following drivers cause overtaking crashes, and removing that pressure is both courteous and safer for you.

Unsealed roads and what your agreement allows
Most standard rental agreements prohibit unsealed roads entirely or name specific exclusions, with damage on them uninsured. Vehicles are tracked, so driving them anyway is not a private decision.
On gravel, reduce speed well below sealed-road pace, brake and steer gently and separately, and leave a very large gap behind anything raising dust. Windscreen damage is the most common claim.
Lowering tyre pressures for corrugations improves comfort and reduces damage, but you must reinflate before returning to sealed roads. Carry a gauge and a compressor if you intend to do this.

Heat, tyres and vehicle checks
Australian heat is hard on tyres, and underinflated or old tyres fail at speed on hot bitumen. Check pressures cold, set them for the loaded vehicle, and inspect the spare before a remote leg.
Check coolant, oil and washer levels regularly, particularly before long outback legs. A breakdown in remote heat is a safety problem rather than an inconvenience.
Carry more water than the trip requires. If the vehicle stops in remote country, water is what keeps the situation manageable while you wait, and you should always wait with the vehicle.

Parking and manoeuvring in towns
Height restrictions in urban car parks are the most common source of expensive campervan damage, and the barrier is usually the first warning. Write the vehicle height somewhere visible from the driver's seat and check every entrance.
Many towns provide oversized vehicle parking on the outskirts or at showgrounds. Using it and walking in is faster than circling a town centre looking for a space that fits.
Do a full walk around the vehicle each morning, checking tyres, lights and that nothing is left on the roof or open underneath.
