Trip widget

Choose a trip to show the next stop and visited progress. Small, medium and large layouts expose different amounts of the itinerary.

The Lock Screen accessory can keep the next stop close during a driving day.

Collection widgets

Show top collections, saved totals or a selected smart collection such as Starred or Want to Visit.

Use a focused collection rather than displaying every saved place.

Nearby map

The nearby widget uses the latest available location snapshot to show nearby places on a map. Medium and large sizes provide more context.

Refresh behaviour depends on iOS and location availability, so open the app before relying on a newly changed route.

What a widget is good for

A widget puts one piece of information on the home screen without opening anything, which matters when you are in and out of a vehicle all day. The useful ones answer a single recurring question at a glance.

For a road trip that question is usually where am I staying tonight, what is nearby, or what is still on the to-do list. A widget answers it in the time it takes to unlock the phone.

Widgets read stored data, so the place information they show remains available when reception does not. Anything live, such as weather, still needs a connection to update.

Trip and nearby widgets

A trip widget surfaces the next stop and keeps the plan visible without opening the app, which is the single most useful thing on a driving day. It is also what a passenger can check without taking your phone.

A nearby widget answers the other common question, which is what is around here right now. This matters most when a plan changes and you need an option quickly rather than a full search.

Between them, these two cover most of what you actually need while moving, with the full app reserved for planning rather than navigation.

Collections on the home screen

A collection widget puts a specific saved list one tap away, which suits a shortlist of backups or the places you are choosing between for tonight.

Pair it with the list structure that works: trip, backups, ideas. Putting the backup list on the home screen is what makes it useful at the moment a campground turns out to be full.

Widgets are most useful when the underlying lists are well maintained. A widget pointing at a list of two hundred unsorted pins does not help.

Setting them up and battery

Add widgets by long pressing the home screen and choosing the app, then pick the size that suits what you want to see. Larger sizes show more entries and take more space.

Widgets refresh periodically rather than continuously, so a very recently added stop may take a moment to appear. Opening the app updates it immediately.

Battery matters on a road trip because the phone is already doing navigation, photographs and searching for signal. Widgets are light, but flight mode in no-coverage areas saves considerably more.

Choosing which widgets to use

Two widgets usually cover a road trip: one showing the next stop on the current trip, and one showing what is nearby. Adding more tends to dilute rather than help.

Put them on the first home screen where you will actually see them. A widget two screens across answers a question you have already opened the app to solve.

Widgets are worth revisiting when the trip changes character, since the useful one on a driving day is not the useful one during a week in a single base.
