Towing a caravan in Australia: weights, speed and state differences

Keep the loaded caravan within the tow vehicle, towbar, coupling and manufacturer limits. Secure the load and inspect chains, hatches, tyres, brakes and lights.

Repeat the inspection during long trips. Heat, vibration and rough surfaces can expose a problem that was not visible at departure.

Nobody rides in the caravan

A towed caravan or trailer is not a passenger compartment. Everyone travels in an approved vehicle seating position with the correct restraint.

Extra length and mass require longer stopping distance, wider cornering lines and smooth steering and braking.

Speed rules vary

Western Australia limits a vehicle towing a trailer or caravan to 100 km/h and has a 60-metre following rule behind certain heavy or towing vehicles unless overtaking.

NSW’s cited 100 km/h cap applies when the towing vehicle or combination exceeds 4.5 tonnes. Never turn one jurisdiction’s rule into a nationwide towing speed.

Reversing, parking and campgrounds

Practise reversing in an empty car park before the trip. Caravan park sites frequently require a reverse into a defined space with neighbours close on both sides, and doing it for the first time with an audience is how vans get damaged.

Book sites suited to your combination length and say you are towing when booking. Many parks keep drive-through sites, which removes most of the difficulty from arrival.

Unhitching gives you an ordinary vehicle for day trips and is worth doing on any stay longer than one night. Use wheel chocks and levelling ramps and check the handbrake holds first.

Roads and conditions to avoid

Many mountain and coastal roads are unsuitable for large combinations, and some are prohibited outright. Check before committing, because turning a caravan around on a narrow road is frequently impossible.

On descents, select a lower gear and use engine braking rather than riding the brakes, which fade and can fail entirely on a long grade with a heavy van behind.

Unsealed roads with corrugations are hard on caravans and cause structural damage over time. Many insurance policies exclude or limit cover for damage sustained on them.

Weights and the paperwork that matters

The limiting figure is whichever is lowest of the tow vehicle's capacity, the towbar rating, the caravan's aggregate trailer mass and the tow ball rating. Exceeding any of them affects handling, braking and insurance.

Weigh the loaded combination rather than estimating. Public weighbridges are widely available and inexpensive, and most caravans travel heavier than their owners believe.

Keep around ten percent of the weight on the tow ball and load heavy items low and over the axle. Rear-loading a caravan is the most common cause of sway.

Before every driving day

Walk around the combination: check the coupling is latched and pinned, safety chains are crossed and connected, the jockey wheel is up, lights and brakes work, and nothing is loose on the drawbar or roof.

Repeat a quick check at the first stop of the day. Heat, vibration and corrugations loosen fittings, and a problem found at a fuel stop is trivial compared with the same problem found at speed.

Consider a towing course before a first long trip, since a day of instruction covers reversing, weight distribution and sway recovery far better than reading about them.
