Drinks are easy to underestimate because they arrive one at a time. Current community price ranges show the difference between a bottle-shop purchase, a cafe stop and a round in a city pub.

01

Retail and venue prices are different products

A pub price includes the venue, staff and service rather than only the liquid. Compare like with like and do not describe a bottle-shop equivalent as the price of a poured drink.

Happy hours and promotions are temporary. Build the budget from the ordinary range, then treat a discount as margin.

02

Alcohol and the driving day

The safest road-trip plan separates drinking from driving completely. Legal blood-alcohol limits differ by licence and vehicle class, and some drivers must have zero BAC.

Choose a designated non-drinking driver, stay overnight or use transport. Never turn a conversion table into a drinking allowance.

Houd er rekening mee
  • Never drink and drive
  • Check local restrictions
  • Carry water
03

Control the quiet daily total

Two coffees and two venue drinks each day can become a substantial weekly amount. Decide which stops matter rather than buying by habit.

Keep drinking water accessible and refill legally. In hot conditions, hydration and shade belong in the safety plan, not the entertainment budget.

04

Coffee is a daily line

Australian coffee culture is strong and the standard in regional towns is genuinely high, which is precisely why it becomes a budget item. Two flat whites a day for two people accumulates without ever feeling like a decision.

A stovetop or aeropress in the van covers the morning cup for a fraction of the cost and leaves the cafe stop as something chosen rather than automatic. Most people who do this end up drinking better coffee.

Roadhouse coffee on long drives is variable at best. On outback routes, making your own is usually both cheaper and considerably better.

Houd er rekening mee
  • Two cups a day adds up fast
  • Make the morning cup yourself
  • Roadhouse coffee is variable
05

Buying alcohol in Australia

Alcohol is sold through licensed bottle shops rather than supermarkets in most states, often attached to a supermarket but operating separately. Trading hours are regulated and vary by state.

Alcohol restrictions apply across many communities and regions, particularly in the Northern Territory, parts of Queensland and Western Australia. Carrying alcohol into a restricted area carries substantial penalties.

Check before travelling with alcohol into remote areas. The restrictions are legally enforced, apply to visitors as much as residents, and ignorance is not a defence.

Houd er rekening mee
  • Bottle shops, not supermarkets
  • Restricted areas carry big penalties
  • Check before entering remote regions
06

Drinking and the driving day

The general limit is 0.05 for full licence holders and zero for learner, provisional and many professional drivers. Random breath testing is common, including on rural roads and during the day.

On a road trip the only safe approach is to separate drinking from driving completely: stay where you are drinking, use a designated driver, or drink once the vehicle is parked for the night.

Morning-after driving catches people out. Alcohol clears at roughly one standard drink an hour and no faster, so a heavy evening can leave you over the limit well into the next morning.

Houd er rekening mee
  • 0.05 general, zero for many drivers
  • Random testing is common and daytime
  • Morning-after driving is the trap
07

Water is the one to get right

Tap water is safe and good across almost all Australian towns and cities, and buying bottled water is close to pure waste. Carry refillable bottles and fill at any potable tap in a town, campground or public facility.

In remote and bush settings the position reverses: bore water may be mineralised or unsuitable, tank water is untreated, and surface water in agricultural country can carry chemical contamination. Treat anything that is not a marked potable town supply.

Carry a decent insulated bottle, because cold water is the drink you will actually want most in Australian conditions and it costs nothing to refill.

Houd er rekening mee
  • Town tap water is safe
  • Bore water is often unsuitable
  • Treat tank and surface water
