Perth to the capes

Head south through Bunbury toward Busselton and Margaret River. Caravan parks are plentiful, while national park camps need closer attention to booking, water and fire conditions.

Hamelin Bay and the capes are exposed to changing wind. Choose the side of the coast that fits the forecast rather than locking every night months ahead.

Karri country to Albany

Pemberton and Walpole trade surf for tall forest, cooler nights and winding roads. Give wet gear time to dry and watch for wildlife through shaded sections.

Albany makes an excellent two-night reset with history, coastal walks, food and repairs. Summer remains fire season even when the forest feels green.

Esperance and Cape Le Grand

The drive from Albany to Esperance is long enough to deserve a break. Reach Cape Le Grand with food, water and a confirmed campground if staying inside the park.

Beach access is not a promise that every vehicle belongs on the sand. Check local conditions, tyre advice and rental exclusions before leaving sealed roads.

Wildflowers and the season

Western Australia's wildflower season runs roughly August to November, moving south as the year progresses, and the south west is at its best in September and October. It is one of the largest wildflower displays on the planet.

Spring is also when the whales pass and the weather is mild, which makes it the single best window for this loop. Summer is hot and dry inland, though the coast stays pleasant.

Winter brings rain and cold to the south west, and while the forests are beautiful in it, camping is considerably less comfortable and some unsealed tracks become difficult.

Karri forests and the climbing trees

The karri forests around Pemberton and Walpole hold some of the tallest hardwood trees in the world. The Valley of the Giants Tree Top Walk near Walpole is a suspended walkway forty metres up through the canopy.

The Gloucester Tree and Dave Evans Bicentennial Tree are climbable fire lookouts with metal spikes driven into the trunk and no safety harness. They are genuinely exposed and not for anyone uncertain about heights.

Beedelup Falls and the Karri Forest Explorer drive link the best of the forest country, and there are several campgrounds within it. Book through the WA parks system in peak season.

Margaret River and the coast

Margaret River is the wine region but the coastline is the reason to camp here, with a string of surf breaks, limestone caves and the Cape to Cape track running 123 kilometres between the two lighthouses.

The caves at Jewel, Lake and Mammoth are separately ticketed and worth choosing between rather than doing all of them. Ngilgi Cave near Yallingup is the most accessible.

Cellar door tastings frequently charge a fee credited against purchase, and cycling between them is not practical here because the distances are larger than they look. Use a tour if you want to taste properly.

Sharks, rips and swimming safely

The south west coast has genuine surf and strong rips, and many beaches are unpatrolled. Swim between the flags where they exist and, where they do not, be conservative about entering the water at all.

White sharks are present along this coast and there have been incidents. The practical response is to avoid dawn, dusk and murky water, avoid swimming alone, and follow any beach closure without argument.

Rip currents cause far more trouble than sharks. If caught in one, do not swim against it: swim parallel to the beach until you are out of the pull, or float and signal for help.

Albany and the south coast

Albany has the National Anzac Centre, one of the better museums in the country, and the Gap and Natural Bridge on the granite coast nearby. The Torndirrup peninsula is exposed and spectacular.

Denmark and Walpole between Albany and Pemberton have the Valley of the Giants and Greens Pool, where granite boulders shelter a calm swimming area. This coast is cooler and wetter than the Margaret River side.

Fremantle and Rottnest Island bookend the loop at the Perth end, and Rottnest is a car-free day trip reached by ferry.

Wildflower timing shifts each year with rainfall, so check current reports rather than assuming a fixed date range when planning a spring trip.
