There is no single nationwide deadline for driving on an overseas licence. Visitor status, residency, language, vehicle class and the state or territory all affect what documents and time limits apply.

01

Visitor rules are jurisdiction-specific

NSW temporary visitors can generally drive for up to six months when eligible, while Victoria also describes a six-month visitor period. Queensland and Western Australia use their own validity and residency rules.

Do not carry one state’s rule across a border. Open the authority page for every jurisdiction on the route.

02

Translations and document conditions

A non-English licence may require an approved English translation or International Driving Permit. Carry the physical documents required and obey every condition on the original licence.

An IDP supports the home licence; it does not replace an expired, suspended or otherwise invalid licence.

Tieni presente
  • Carry the original licence
  • Arrange an approved translation
  • Check every state
03

Vehicle class matters

A standard car class in NSW and Queensland generally covers no more than 4.5 tonnes GVM and 12 occupants including the driver. A larger motorhome may require a different authorised class.

Rental permission and insurance do not override licensing law. Confirm all three before accepting the vehicle.

04

Carrying the right documents

Carry the original overseas licence at all times, along with an English translation or International Driving Permit if it is not in English. The permit supports the licence rather than replacing it and both must be present.

Obtain the permit in your home country before travelling, because it generally cannot be issued after arrival. It is inexpensive and available from the relevant motoring authority.

Police can require both at a roadside stop, and being unable to produce them is an offence in its own right regardless of whether you are otherwise entitled to drive.

Tieni presente
  • Carry the original licence always
  • Get the IDP before you travel
  • Failure to produce is an offence
05

Becoming a resident changes everything

The visitor periods apply to visitors. Once you become a resident of a state, the clock is different and conversion becomes mandatory within a defined period, frequently three months.

What counts as becoming a resident varies and can be triggered by a visa type, employment or simply length of stay. Working holiday visa holders in particular should check the position in the state they are living in.

Driving on an overseas licence after the residency deadline is driving unlicensed, with the insurance consequences that follow if anything happens.

Tieni presente
  • Residency triggers mandatory conversion
  • Working holiday visas need checking
  • Past the deadline is unlicensed driving
06

Conditions and vehicle classes

Any condition on your original licence applies here: corrective lenses, automatic transmission only, or a graduated or probationary restriction. Driving outside those conditions is driving unlicensed.

A standard car class generally covers vehicles to 4.5 tonnes and twelve occupants, which covers most rental campervans but not all larger motorhomes. Check the vehicle specification against your class before booking.

Towing is assessed on the combination weight rather than the vehicle alone, so a car licence may not cover a heavy caravan behind a large four-wheel drive.

Tieni presente
  • Home licence conditions carry over
  • 4.5 tonnes is the usual car limit
  • Towing is assessed on combined weight
07

What to do if you are stopped

Pull over promptly and safely, stay in the vehicle unless asked otherwise, and have your licence and any translation or permit ready. Random breath testing is routine and does not imply suspicion of anything.

Police in Australia are generally straightforward at roadside stops. Being unable to produce a licence is an offence in itself, so keeping the documents in the vehicle rather than in luggage matters.

Keep a photograph of every document stored separately from the originals, so a lost wallet is an inconvenience rather than the end of the driving.

Tieni presente
  • Random breath testing is routine
  • Keep documents in the vehicle
  • Failure to produce is an offence
