Australia’s long-distance transport ranges from a functional overnight coach to an all-inclusive rail experience. Price, travel time, sleeping arrangement and inclusions must be compared together.

01

Transport and experience

A coach seat and an all-inclusive sleeper train do not solve the same need. One buys movement; the other may bundle accommodation, meals and excursions.

List what the fare includes before comparing it with flights, driving or several hotel nights.

02

Time, sleep and arrival

An overnight service may save a room but deliver a poor night for someone who cannot sleep seated. Daylight arrival and onward transport also matter.

Check luggage limits, bicycle or surfboard rules and the distance between the terminal and the actual destination.

À garder en tête
  • Confirm the current timetable
  • Price the terminal transfer
  • Read luggage limits
03

Treat old fare sheets carefully

Queensland Rail directs travellers to current information, while the publicly indexed sheet provides only a dated benchmark. Do not reproduce it as a current guaranteed fare.

Industrial action, track work and seasonal timetables can change service. Confirm directly before building fixed bookings around the arrival.

04

The long-distance coach network

Greyhound and a handful of regional operators connect the major cities and many towns along the east coast and through the centre. Booked well ahead they are the cheapest way to move without a vehicle, and fares rise sharply close to departure.

Coaches are slower than driving and stop frequently. What they do not do is reach national parks, trailheads or campsites, so a bus-based trip is shaped by the network rather than by where you would ideally go.

Hop-on hop-off passes exist for backpacker routes along the east coast. Compare the pass against the individual fares you would actually book rather than the maximum possible use, because most people use fewer trips than expected.

À garder en tête
  • Book coaches early for low fares
  • Coaches serve towns, not trailheads
  • Compare passes against real usage
05

The long-distance trains

Australia's long-distance rail is largely an experience product rather than transport. The Ghan, the Indian Pacific and the Spirit of Queensland each bundle accommodation, meals and in some cases excursions into the fare.

Prices reflect that, and comparing a Ghan fare with a flight is comparing two different purchases. One buys movement, the other buys several days of travel that is itself the holiday.

There are also ordinary regional services, particularly in New South Wales and Queensland, which are inexpensive and useful for reaching regional towns without a car.

À garder en tête
  • Long-distance rail is an experience
  • Fares bundle meals and accommodation
  • Regional services are cheap and useful
06

Ferries and island access

The Spirit of Tasmania is the only vehicle route to Tasmania and is a substantial fixed cost priced by vehicle size. Foot passenger fares are far cheaper, which occasionally makes hiring on the island worth pricing.

Kangaroo Island, Fraser Island and the Whitsundays all have vehicle or passenger ferries, and the vehicle fares are considerably higher than passenger ones. On some islands a vehicle is unnecessary anyway.

Book vehicle crossings well ahead in peak season. These services have limited capacity and sell out, and a missed crossing can cost days on an island itinerary.

À garder en tête
  • Foot passengers pay far less
  • Vehicle ferries sell out in peak season
  • A vehicle is unnecessary on some islands
07

Luggage, comfort and the overnight question

Coach luggage allowances are generally generous but camping gear, surfboards and bicycles frequently need pre-booking and attract a fee. Confirm before turning up with an oversized item.

An overnight coach saves a night's accommodation and delivers a poor night's sleep for most people. Factor in that you will arrive tired and probably lose the following morning, which changes the real saving considerably.

Book the seat as well as the ticket where the operator allows it, since long-distance services fill and the remaining seats are rarely the good ones.

À garder en tête
  • Oversized items need pre-booking
  • Overnight coaches cost you the morning
  • Confirm allowances in advance
