Jindabyne to Bright crosses national parks, river valleys and high roads. Travel after seasonal roads open and keep an alternative ready for sudden alpine weather.
Jindabyne and Kosciuszko
Jindabyne is the resupply point for Kosciuszko National Park. Check park entry, campground bookings and road conditions before heading toward Thredbo, Charlotte Pass or Geehi.
Cold wind and fast storms are normal alpine risks. Carry layers, rain protection and a turnaround time on every walk.
Geehi to Omeo
Geehi Flats offers river camping when open and conditions are suitable. Keep a safe distance from the water in wet weather and store food securely.
The road toward Omeo is scenic and demanding. Fuel before the remote section, expect limited reception and stop early if fog or fatigue arrives.

Dinner Plain and Bright
Dinner Plain provides a high-country break before the descent to Harrietville and Bright. Even in summer, nights can be cold.
Bright has holiday parks, repairs and an easy finish. Seasonal closures can reshape the entire route, so confirm them before departure, not at the gate.
The Alpine Way and the road network
The Alpine Way between Khancoban and Jindabyne is the spine of this route, sealed and open year round but requiring wheel chains to be carried in winter within the national park regardless of conditions.
Kosciuszko National Park charges vehicle entry, higher in the ski season. The pass is per vehicle per day and an annual option exists if you are visiting repeatedly.
The Barry Way south to Victoria and several other connecting roads are unsealed, steep and seasonally closed. Check status before planning a crossing between states through the park.

Climbing Kosciuszko
Australia's highest point at 2,228 metres is reached either from Thredbo via the chairlift and a 13 kilometre return walk on raised steel mesh, or from Charlotte Pass on a longer 18 kilometre return route.
The Thredbo route is the easy option and genuinely accessible for most people in summer. Neither route is technical, but both are fully exposed alpine terrain with no shelter and weather that changes fast.
In winter both become serious snow routes requiring navigation, avalanche awareness and proper equipment. People die on this mountain in winter, most often after underestimating a walk that is easy in January.

Camping in the alpine country
Kosciuszko has campgrounds at Thredbo Diggings, Island Bend, Geehi and Tom Groggin among others, most first come and basic. They fill over summer and long weekends and are cold at night in any season.
Above the treeline, camping is restricted to protect fragile alpine vegetation and water catchments, with minimum distances from lakes and roads. Read the park rules rather than assuming a flat spot is available.
Fires are prohibited across large parts of the park including above the treeline, and total fire bans are common in summer. Carry a gas cooker and check the current restrictions.

Brumbies, huts and the season
The high country huts are historic shelters maintained by volunteers, available as emergency refuge rather than accommodation. Leave them clean, close the doors properly and restock any wood.
Wild horses are present in the park and are a contentious management issue. They are large, unpredictable animals: do not approach or feed them, and take particular care driving at dawn and dusk.
Summer, from December to March, gives wildflowers on the high plains and comfortable walking. Winter is the ski season with a completely different set of requirements, costs and road conditions.

The Snowy scheme and the valleys
The Snowy Mountains Scheme shaped this country and the visitor centre at Cooma and the Tumut area explain it. Lake Jindabyne and Lake Eucumbene are both products of it and both have lakeside camping.
Yarrangobilly Caves in the north of Kosciuszko has a thermal pool at twenty seven degrees year round, which is an excellent stop after a cold night on the high plains.
Bright and Mount Beauty on the Victorian side connect this route to the High Country, making a longer alpine loop across both states possible.
Wheel chains must be carried within Kosciuszko in winter regardless of the forecast, and the requirement is enforced at park entry points.
