Fuel is where distance becomes money. Official Fuel Plan data for 5 August 2026 put the five-largest-city average at A$2.08 per litre for petrol and A$2.47 for diesel, while remote prices can be materially higher.

The calculation
Multiply kilometres by litres per 100 kilometres, divide by 100, then multiply by the price per litre. A 1,000 km drive at 12 L/100 km uses 120 litres.
Use the vehicle’s real loaded consumption when possible. Roof loads, towing, wind, speed, terrain and air conditioning can move it beyond the brochure figure.
Capital averages are not remote quotes
The official city benchmark is a transparent starting point. Remote roadhouses carry different costs and are too important to skip merely to chase a lower price farther ahead.
Fill conservatively, know the next dependable service and keep fuel stops inside the trip plan.
- Use loaded consumption
- Add a remote margin
- Never run the tank to empty
Reduce cost without reducing safety
Slower, smoother driving and correct tyre pressures can help, but pressures must suit the vehicle, load and manufacturer guidance. Never coast unsafely or carry fuel in an unsuitable container.
The biggest saving is often fewer unnecessary kilometres. Group nearby stops and avoid crossing the same city or remote section repeatedly.
Where fuel costs most
Prices are lowest in the capitals and highest at remote roadhouses, where the premium can be very large. The Nullarbor, the Kimberley, central Australia and the Cape all carry substantial mark-ups.
That premium is never a reason to stretch a tank. The cost of twenty extra litres at a high price is trivial compared with running dry hundreds of kilometres from anywhere with no reception.
Fuel price apps and supermarket discount vouchers save real money in urban and regional areas and are largely irrelevant once remote, where there is no competing station.
- Remote premiums are substantial
- Never stretch a tank to save money
- Fuel apps help in town only
What actually changes consumption
Load, roof boxes, headwind, sustained climbing, towing and speed all matter, and a loaded campervan into a headwind can use a quarter more than the brochure figure. Air conditioning has a modest effect by comparison.
Tyre pressures should be set for the loaded vehicle rather than the empty one. Rental campervans frequently arrive underinflated, which costs fuel and handling at the same time.
Every ten kilometres per hour above about ninety costs noticeably more in a high-sided vehicle. On long straights, slowing down saves fuel and reduces fatigue together.
- Set pressures for the loaded vehicle
- Headwind costs more than aircon
- Speed costs more in tall vehicles
Carrying fuel and the remote legs
Where the gap between stations exceeds your range, carry additional fuel in approved jerry cans, properly secured and vented, and never inside the living space of a vehicle.
Work out your genuine range from measured consumption rather than the manufacturer's figure, then plan to arrive with a substantial reserve. Roadhouses can be closed, out of stock or unable to process a card.
Diesel is generally more available than premium unleaded in remote Australia, which is a practical argument for diesel on outback routes independent of the fuel price itself.
- Approved jerry cans, secured and vented
- Plan range from measured consumption
- Diesel is more available remotely
Fuel quality and vehicle requirements
Premium unleaded is not available at every remote roadhouse, and some carry only regular unleaded and diesel. If your vehicle requires premium, check availability along the route rather than assuming.
Diesel in remote areas is generally reliable and widely stocked because it is what the trucks and stations use. That availability, rather than the pump price, is the strongest practical argument for diesel on outback routes.
Record the odometer at each fill even if you do nothing else, because it gives you a real range figure within a week and removes most fuel anxiety.
- Premium is not always available
- Diesel is stocked everywhere remote
- Check grades along the route
