Australian city fares use different rules, payment methods and caps. A flat Queensland journey, a Perth DayRider and Sydney’s daily cap answer different questions, so compare the full day you expect to travel.

01

Compare the same unit

A fare per journey is not a daily maximum. Count the expected trips, understand transfers and then apply the operator’s current cap rules.

Use the accepted payment method correctly. Contactless, stored-value and cash fares can differ, and tapping errors can remove a cap or create an incomplete trip.

02

Airport travel is often separate

Private or station-access charges may sit outside ordinary public-transport pricing. Brisbane’s Airtrain is excluded from Queensland’s 50-cent fare, while Sydney Airport charges an access fee in addition to the rail fare.

Price the airport leg separately before deciding whether rail, bus, shuttle, taxi or rideshare works best.

Ten en cuenta
  • Check airport exclusions
  • Tap on and off correctly
  • Confirm temporary fare periods
03

Use transport to avoid city driving

Parking, tolls and unfamiliar traffic can make public transport valuable even when several people share a car. Compare the full vehicle cost, not only the train fare.

Leave the campervan or caravan at a legal base where possible and use city transport for dense central areas.

04

Each city has its own card

Australia has no national transport card. Sydney uses Opal, Melbourne Myki, Brisbane and southeast Queensland go card, Perth SmartRider and Adelaide metroCARD, with contactless bank card payment available in some but not all.

Melbourne is the notable exception where contactless is not accepted on most services, so a Myki is required. Check before arriving rather than assuming your bank card will work.

Daily and weekly caps exist in most systems and change the arithmetic substantially once you make several trips. Work out the expected number of journeys before choosing between a pass and paying per trip.

Ten en cuenta
  • No national transport card
  • Melbourne needs a Myki
  • Caps change the arithmetic
05

Airport connections

Sydney charges a station access fee on top of the rail fare, making the airport train considerably more expensive than an ordinary trip. Brisbane's Airtrain is similarly priced as a separate service.

Melbourne, Perth, Adelaide and Darwin have bus or rail links at more ordinary fares. With three or more people and luggage, a rideshare is sometimes competitive with individual fares.

None of these are typically covered by a standard day pass. Price the airport leg separately when comparing options.

Ten en cuenta
  • Sydney adds a station access fee
  • Airport links are priced separately
  • Rideshare can beat fares for groups
06

When to leave the vehicle behind

Driving a campervan into central Sydney or Melbourne is unpleasant, parking is expensive and height restrictions catch large vehicles out constantly. Leaving it at a caravan park and taking transport in is faster and cheaper.

The same applies in most capitals. Base yourself outside the centre and use the local network for the days you want to be in the city.

Outside the capitals and a handful of regional centres, public transport is minimal to non-existent. A trip planned around buses works between cities and does not reach campsites or trailheads.

Ten en cuenta
  • Height limits catch vans in city car parks
  • Base outside, travel in
  • Rural transport is essentially absent
07

Concessions and visitor passes

Concession fares generally require an Australian concession card, and overseas student or senior cards are usually not accepted. Budget for full adult fares unless you have confirmed otherwise for that specific network.

Some cities sell visitor passes bundling transport with attractions. Work out the number of trips and entries you will actually use before buying, because these usually assume a busier itinerary than most travellers keep.

Where you are staying more than a few days in a city, a weekly cap or pass usually beats daily fares and removes the need to think about it.

Ten en cuenta
  • Overseas concession cards rarely work
  • Visitor passes assume a busy schedule
  • Do the arithmetic before buying
