International visitors can often drive on a current overseas licence for a limited period, but each state and territory sets its own conditions.
Check every jurisdiction
Confirm the rule with the transport authority for each state or territory on the route. Residency, visa status and length of stay can change what is required.
Carry the original licence. If it is not in English, bring an accepted English translation or International Driving Permit as required.
Vehicle class and rental terms
Your licence must cover the vehicle class and weight. A motorhome can be larger than the passenger vehicle you normally drive.
Rental agreements can prohibit unsealed roads, beaches, floodwater and driving after dark. Insurance may not cover a breach.

Australian road habits
Drive on the left, learn local roundabout rules and leave more braking distance in a heavy vehicle. Long rural distances make fatigue a major risk.
Stop before tiredness becomes obvious. Avoid dawn and dusk on wildlife-heavy roads.
Rental company conditions sit on top of the law
Even where the law permits you to drive, rental companies apply their own rules: a minimum age, a licence held for a minimum period, young driver surcharges and sometimes refusal of licences from particular countries.
Confirm these at booking rather than at the counter. Being refused a vehicle at an airport depot after a long flight is a genuinely difficult problem to solve.
Many agreements also prohibit specific roads, unsealed surfaces and beach driving entirely, with damage on them uninsured. Read those clauses before planning a route.

Translations and international permits
A licence not in English needs an accurate English translation or an International Driving Permit, carried alongside the original. The permit supports the licence rather than replacing it, so both must be present.
Get the permit in your home country before travelling, because it generally cannot be issued once you have arrived. It is inexpensive and quick to obtain from the relevant motoring authority.
Carry both documents in the vehicle at all times. Police can require them at a roadside stop and being unable to produce them is an offence in its own right.

Vehicle class and campervans
A standard car licence in most Australian states covers vehicles up to 4.5 tonnes gross vehicle mass and twelve occupants including the driver. Larger motorhomes require a light rigid or medium rigid class.
Your home licence class determines the Australian equivalence, and a car licence in one country does not automatically cover a 4.5 tonne vehicle. Check before booking a large motorhome.
Towing adds further constraints. The combination weight, not just the vehicle, determines what class you need, and exceeding it affects insurance as well as legality.

Insurance and what excess reduction covers
Rental excess amounts in Australia are typically high, frequently several thousand dollars. Excess reduction products lower it but commonly exclude windscreens, tyres, undercarriage, water damage and single-vehicle accidents.
Those exclusions cover most of what actually happens on Australian roads, particularly on gravel. Read what is excluded rather than what is covered, and price a separate policy if the exclusions matter.
Third party injury cover works differently from many countries and varies by state. Compulsory third party insurance is included with registration, but property damage to others is not automatically covered.

Roadside assistance and breakdowns
Check whether roadside assistance is included with your rental and what it covers in remote areas, because many policies limit towing distance and remote recovery is extremely expensive.
Carry the assistance number written down as well as in a phone, and be able to describe your location using the nearest roadside marker or landmark. In remote areas, staying with the vehicle is always the right decision.
Take photographs of your licence, permit and rental agreement and store them separately, so a lost wallet does not also end the driving part of the trip.
Rental agreements commonly exclude unsealed roads entirely, so confirm what your vehicle is permitted to drive on before planning a route through gravel country.
