A campsite can be a few dollars per person or more than a basic room. The price reflects location, facilities, season, booking conditions and whether the operator charges per site or per guest.

01

Understand the charging unit

A per-person hike-in fee and a per-site powered rate cannot be ranked without the group size. Add extra-person, vehicle, park-entry and booking charges before comparing.

Facilities matter. Toilets, showers, power, water, laundry, dump points and a convenient town location can replace other spending.

02

Promotions are not normal rates

Commercial examples may require a minimum stay, restricted dates or two-person occupancy. Record them as observed offers rather than a guaranteed national average.

Government fees also change by financial year and category. Open the exact campground page before travelling.

Ten en cuenta
  • Check the fee unit
  • Confirm inclusions
  • Read arrival conditions
03

Use paid and simple nights deliberately

A low-facility night works when the vehicle and supplies are ready. A serviced night is valuable when tanks, batteries, laundry and people all need a reset.

Keep a paid legal alternative saved near popular free or low-cost areas. Full sites and changed local restrictions should not force an unsafe late drive.

04

National park fees vary by state

Every state runs its own parks system with its own fee structure, booking platform and pass arrangements. There is no national park camping pass, and a pass bought in one state is worthless in the next.

Several states charge vehicle entry separately from camping, so a site advertised at a low nightly rate can cost considerably more once entry is added. Check both figures before comparing options.

Multi-park or annual passes are worth buying once you plan to visit more than two or three parks in a state. They rarely cover camping fees, only entry.

Ten en cuenta
  • No national parks pass exists
  • Entry is often charged separately
  • Passes cover entry, not camping
05

Free camping and what it really costs

Free camping saves real money when the vehicle is set up for it and the route already passes suitable areas. It stops saving when you drive an extra sixty kilometres to reach a free site.

The hidden costs are showers, laundry, water, dump points and the occasional paid night that self-sufficiency still requires. Budget for a paid night more often than you plan to take one.

An infringement for camping in a prohibited area erases weeks of savings in a single notice, and coastal councils issue them routinely. Free is only free where it is legal.

Ten en cuenta
  • Do not drive far to save a fee
  • Free camping still has costs
  • One fine erases weeks of saving
06

Comparing per person against per site

National park sites frequently charge per person and commercial parks per site with a stated occupancy. The cheaper option therefore flips with party size, and families regularly get this backwards.

Run the arithmetic for your actual party and nights rather than comparing headline rates. Two adults and two children produce a very different answer from a solo traveller on the same two options.

Then add power, showers and booking fees. A powered site with amenities can be better value than a cheaper unpowered one once you count what it replaces.

Ten en cuenta
  • Per person versus per site flips with party size
  • Run the numbers for your actual party
  • Count what the fee replaces
07

Booking systems differ by state

Each state runs its own booking platform with its own rules on how far ahead you can reserve, cancellation terms and whether sites are allocated or general. Learning the system for the states on your route saves a lot of frustration.

Popular parks release bookings on a rolling window and the best sites go within minutes of opening. Where a specific site matters, find out the release date and book at that moment rather than a week later.

Keep booking confirmations saved offline, because campgrounds with the poorest reception are frequently the ones where a warden will ask to see one.

Ten en cuenta
  • Each state has its own platform
  • Rolling release windows fill fast
  • Find the release date for popular parks
