North of Brisbane the seasons change faster than the scenery. Give the drive at least two weeks and move your longest days away from the places you most want to swim, walk or sit still.
Brisbane to the Capricorn Coast
Start with Noosa or the Cooloola coast, then decide whether K'gari fits your vehicle and schedule. Island travel brings permits, tide windows and soft sand, so it should never be treated as a spontaneous side road.
Agnes Water is a comfortable break before the longer central coast distances. Restock in major towns and avoid turning a late finish into night driving through wildlife country.
Whitsundays to the wet tropics
Cape Hillsborough offers forest, beach and a quieter night before Airlie Beach. Airlie is the practical base for Whitsunday trips, with more services and busy holiday parks.
Mission Beach slows the pace again. Read cassowary signs, secure food and follow seasonal swimming advice. Inland, the Atherton Tablelands can be cooler and provides waterfalls, farm stays and caravan parks.

Daintree and Cape Tribulation
Cross the Daintree River with enough fuel and daylight. Mobile reception can be patchy, roads may be affected by heavy rain and large vehicles need to check access carefully.
Choose a legal campground or caravan park and keep food secure. Check crocodile warnings and never assume a beach or creek is safe for swimming because other people are near the water.
Where the Daintree changes the rules
North of the Daintree River the road becomes narrower, steeper and partly unsealed beyond Cape Tribulation. The Bloomfield Track to Cooktown is four-wheel drive only, prohibited in most rentals, and impassable after rain.
The Daintree River ferry is the only crossing and runs to set hours with a queue in peak season. Check the operating times before planning a late return, because being on the wrong side after the last ferry means a very long detour.
Accommodation north of the river is limited and books out. There is no supermarket and fuel is expensive, so restock in Mossman or Port Douglas before crossing.

Crocodiles are the constraint up here
Estuarine crocodiles inhabit every waterway in the tropical north, including creeks, mangroves, estuaries and the beaches themselves. The Daintree and Cape Tribulation coast is prime habitat and the risk is real rather than theoretical.
Do not swim in or beside any waterway unless it is a designated safe swimming area. Do not camp within a few metres of the water, do not clean fish at the edge, and do not stand in the shallows for a photograph.
The safe swimming here is in the designated freshwater holes such as Mossman Gorge and Emmagen Creek, and even those carry signage worth reading each visit because conditions change.

Rainforest, reef and the wet season
The Daintree is the oldest continuously surviving rainforest on the planet and the boardwalks at Marrdja and Dubuji are the easiest way to see it properly. Early morning gives the best chance of cassowaries and the fewest people.
Cape Tribulation is where the rainforest meets the reef, and reef trips run from Cape Trib and Port Douglas. The northern reef sites are generally in better condition than those closer to Cairns.
The wet season, roughly November to April, brings heavy rain, road closures and stinger season. The dry season is the straightforward time to visit and also when the roads and tours reliably operate.

Breaking the drive from Brisbane
Brisbane to Cape Tribulation is around 1,900 kilometres and needs a minimum of five driving days to be enjoyable. The Sunshine Coast, Hervey Bay, Airlie Beach and Townsville are the natural overnight breaks.
The Bruce Highway carries heavy freight and is not a scenic drive for much of its length. Treat the southern half as transit and save the time for the tropical north, which is what you came for.
Consider flying to Cairns and hiring there if your time is limited. It removes four days of driving and puts you straight into the part of the route that is genuinely distinctive.

Cassowaries and driving in the wet tropics
Southern cassowaries live in the rainforest between Mission Beach and the Daintree and are struck by vehicles regularly. Signed cassowary zones require reduced speed and they mean it.
They are large, powerful birds and can be dangerous if approached or fed. Never feed one, keep well back, and if one approaches put a tree or your vehicle between you rather than running.
Mission Beach and Etty Bay south of Cairns are the other reliable cassowary areas, and Etty Bay in particular sees them come onto the beach.
The Daintree ferry queue can exceed an hour in peak season, so aim to cross mid-morning or late afternoon rather than around the middle of the day.
