Carnarvon Gorge

Book a base near Carnarvon Gorge and start walks early. Takarakka and national park arrangements differ, so confirm the exact site, access and facilities.

Carry water on every walk and do not plan a long gorge day immediately after a full driving day.

Longreach and Winton

Longreach provides repairs, groceries and a strong dose of pastoral history. Winton adds dinosaur country and makes a sensible second base before turning farther west.

Fuel distances grow and reception thins. Ask locally about road conditions, especially after rain, and avoid unsealed shortcuts that do not suit your vehicle.

Boodjamulla

Boodjamulla National Park is remote and seasonal access matters. Confirm the road, campground booking, fuel range and whether your vehicle setup is suitable before leaving Mount Isa or Camooweal.

Stay longer than one night if conditions allow. The journey is too substantial to treat the park as a quick photograph before turning around.

Distances and the roadhouse rhythm

Outback Queensland runs on roadhouses rather than towns, and the gaps between fuel can exceed 200 kilometres. Winton, Longreach, Barcaldine and Charleville are the main service centres and everything between them is sparse.

Fuel range is the planning constraint. Fill at every opportunity rather than at every need, and carry twenty litres of drinking water minimum plus food for an extra day.

Mobile coverage exists in towns and disappears between them. Tell someone your route and expected arrival, and consider hiring a satellite messenger for the remoter legs.

Dinosaurs and the inland sea

Winton and Richmond sit on some of the richest dinosaur fossil country in the world, and the Australian Age of Dinosaurs facility near Winton holds the largest collection of Australian dinosaur fossils. Tours run to a working laboratory.

Lark Quarry preserves a set of dinosaur trackways, and the drive out is unsealed and can close after rain. Check conditions before committing, because the road becomes impassable quickly.

Richmond and Hughenden complete the fossil trail to the north, and together they explain the inland sea that covered this country. It is a genuinely unusual thing to build a road trip around.

Unsealed roads and the wet

Many outback Queensland roads are unsealed and close entirely after rain, sometimes for days, because driving them wet destroys the surface and attracts substantial fines. Closure is enforced and not advisory.

Check road conditions with the relevant council or the state road authority before setting out each day. A dry forecast where you are means nothing if it rained upstream two days ago.

The wet season, roughly November to March, brings extreme heat as well as closures. The dry season from April to October is when this country is comfortable and accessible.

Artesian baths and stargazing

The Great Artesian Basin feeds hot bore baths in many outback towns, and soaking in mineral water at forty degrees under a desert sky is one of the genuine pleasures of this trip. Mitchell, Cunnamulla and Eulo all have facilities.

The night skies out here are among the darkest accessible anywhere, with essentially no light pollution. Charleville has the Cosmos Centre with telescope viewing, and any roadhouse car park will show you the Milky Way properly.

Bring a red torch and give your eyes twenty minutes to adjust. A phone screen at full brightness ruins night vision for everyone nearby, and out here that is a real loss.

Longreach and the Stockman's Hall of Fame

Longreach holds the Australian Stockman's Hall of Fame and the Qantas Founders Museum, including a decommissioned 747 you can walk through. Together they explain the inland far better than the landscape alone does.

Winton has the Waltzing Matilda Centre and the Musical Fence, and the town's pubs are worth an evening. These inland towns depend on visitor spending, so stopping matters more here than on the coast.

Charleville and Cunnamulla in the south link back towards New South Wales, and both have artesian bore baths and dark sky facilities.

Unsealed outback roads close after rain and stay closed until they dry, which can be several days, so build flexibility into any route using them.
