Tyre pressures should be set for the loaded vehicle rather than the empty one. Rental campervans frequently arrive underinflated, which costs fuel and handling at the same time.

Every ten kilometres per hour above about ninety costs noticeably more in a high-sided vehicle. On long straights, slowing down saves fuel and reduces fatigue together.

Carrying fuel and the remote legs

Where the gap between stations exceeds your range, carry additional fuel in approved jerry cans, properly secured and vented, and never inside the living space of a vehicle.

Work out your genuine range from measured consumption rather than the manufacturer's figure, then plan to arrive with a substantial reserve. Roadhouses can be closed, out of stock or unable to process a card.

Diesel is generally more available than premium unleaded in remote Australia, which is a practical argument for diesel on outback routes independent of the fuel price itself.

Fuel quality and vehicle requirements
